For some actors, including the casts of "Vice" and "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story", Thursday morning's Golden Globe nominations announcement was cause for celebration. Kidman, a Globes favorite to be sure, squeezed her way into the best actress in a drama field, nominated for her Performance with a capital P as a grizzled, bewigged police detective in Destroyer.

Benedict Cumberbatch was also shortlisted for playing Patrick Melrose in the Sky Atlantic drama of the same name based on Edward St Aubyn's novels, as was Thandie Newton, for Westworld. However, don't discount the superhero film, which definitely stands a chance, especially considering it's the highest rated film out of all of them.

It was recently announced that 2019 Golden Globes will be hosted by Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg, with the news eliciting excitement among social media users. There were plenty of pleasant and unexpected surprises, though, including The Good Place picking up two nominations after being shut out past year, and Elsie Fisher being nominated for Eighth Grade.

The 76th Golden Globe awards are scheduled for Monday, January 7th Australian time, with the ceremony commencing at midday AEDT.

Jim Carrey: No stranger to the Golden Globes - he's has won two - some may have been surprised to hear Carrey's name called in the best comedic actors category for his role in the Showtime series "Kidding".

I'm on record pointing out the ridiculousness of the Golden Globe Awards, particularly when it comes to TV.

While the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is known for its quirkier selections and categorizations, few saw the resounding success of Vice coming.

For the Best Motion Picture, Black Panther is up against A Star Is Born, Bohemian Rhapsody, If Beale Street Could Talk and BlacKkKlansman.

Even though she's been there and done that with the Globes, she's still positioned to make history if she wins again. Krasinski was expected to be a bigger player, for director (his debut), screenwriting, and even acting alongside his wife Emily Blunt, who did get her own best actress nomination for "Mary Poppins Returns". Last year's host was comedian and late-night star Seth Meyers. As the first major award show following the Harvey Weinstein revelations and subsequent launch of the #MeToo movement, the usually more frivolous ceremony had an atypical edge of seriousness.
