Norway's Ada Hegerberg picked up the inaugural women's Ballon d'Or at Monday's ceremony in Paris after a stunning season for French side Lyon, whom she helped to a third successive Champions League title.

He also shared a video saying that the controversy stemmed from "a distortion of my English level and my English culture level, which is obviously not enough because I didn't mean to offend anyone and didn't know this could be seen as such an offence".

The co-host of the Ballon d'Or ceremony asked the Norwegian worldwide and Lyon's forward Ada Hegerberg to twerk on stage after she became the first female victor ever in this prestigious award ceremony.

"I explained to Ada Hegerberg the buzz and she told me she understood it was a joke", said Solveig in a tweet. I got to dance a bit, and I got the Ballon d'Or, so nothing else was in my mind. I don't think the respect has been there.

Ada Hegerberg has 250 goals to her name and holds a 15 goal record in the 2017/18 UEFA Women's Champions League.

"Why do woman [sic] still have to put up with that s***?"

Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, she added: "He (Solveig) came to me after and was really sad that it went that way".

Professional Italian club AS Roma called out Solveig as well, crowning the DJ as the new "idiot of the day".

He wrote on Instagram: "Another example of the ridiculous sexism that still exists in sport. I'd imagine something to do with football", said Andy Murray. Modric and Kylian Mbappe, who won the award for best young player, weren't asked to do anything on stage but accept the reward for their hard work and dedication to the game.

He concluded his message by referring to a "level of sexism unreal". "Nevertheless, my apologies to anyone who may have been offended". "It was the most important people in my life - most of them, some of them were missing - but I am so happy to share this moment with them".

Earlier, Hegerberg spoke of her pride in winning the prize and said she hoped it would motivate female players.

In Paris to collect her Ballon d'Or at a gala on Monday, Hegerberg told The Associated Press she has no plans to reconsider her decision taken to preserve her "authenticity and my values, as a person, as a footballer". "I think there are a lot of other subjects to discuss if we talk about sexual matters".
