Bush, a Republican president from 1989 to 1993 who was credited for contributing to the end of the Cold War, was the oldest living president in history.

Bush suffered from a form of Parkinson's disease and had been hospitalized several times in recent years.

The day after her death, Mr Bush was hospitalised with a blood infection.

Bush was the last veteran of World War II to serve as USA president.

In his retirement years, Bush watched as one of his sons, George W. Bush, twice won the presidency, only the second time in USA history that a father and son both became the US leaders.

In 2011, Bush was honoured with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.

Mr Bush and his wife, Barbara Bush, had six children and were married for 73 years - the longest presidential marriage in United States history.

Bush Sr. served two years as Ronald Reagan's vice president before upgrading to the most powerful position in the government. The two were married 70 years. In 1943, he was the youngest pilot in the Navy. He flew a total of 58 combat missions during World War II, including one where he was shot down by Japanese forces.

In his rise to the presidency, Bush held a variety of key positions over the years, often deemed by Republican presidents as the most qualified man in US public life.

He Graduated in 1948 with a degree in economics (Yale University). He made two unsuccessful runs for Senate, but would later serve in various political capacities - including as the USA ambassador the United Nations, Republican National Committee chair, and Central Intelligence Agency director.

As one of his first major decisions, Bush chose to remove Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega - a former USA ally turned global drug lord - from power.

The longest living president in USA history, one of his biggest achievements was steering America through the end of the Cold War. Bush was able to create an global coalition and led a military strike to drive Hussein out of the country.

Bush faced a serious challenge when Iraqi President Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1990. Around 425,000 U.S. troops and 118,000 coalition forces were mobilized for weeks of aerial strikes and a 100-hour ground battle.

Still, he lived to see his son, George W., twice elected to the presidency - only the second father-and-son chief executives, following John Adams and John Quincy Adams.
