"We all need to realize our responsibilities and the critical role we all have to play to make Pakistan HIV free", the minister said while addressing a Seminar in connection with World AIDS Day. "Our efforts must continue apace in order to eliminate HIV". It is important not to delay if you have put yourself at risk.

HIV remains a major public health concern, affecting more than 2 million people in Europe, especially in the eastern regions like Russian Federation, according to a new study.

European Union and European Economic Area countries saw a reduction in 2017 rates, mainly driven by a 20 percent drop since 2015 among men who have sex with men. They include successful programmes to offer more frequent and targeted HIV testing to promote earlier diagnosis.

"HIV starts off (in) key populations - meaning drug users, commercial sex workers and men having sex with men - but after that it (increases) exponentially. if there is no more intervention", Dara told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Almost 160,000 people were newly infected in Europe past year, and more than 130,000 of those diagnoses were among people in the East - the most ever recorded there, CNN reported. While efforts to prevent new HIV infections are gradually showing signs of progress, we are not on course to meet the 90-90-90 targets by the 2020 deadline. This target calls for 90% of people living with HIV to be diagnosed, that 90% of people diagnosed are receiving antiretroviral therapy and 90% of people on treatment are virally suppressed and unable to pass on the infection.

In Europe, over 80pc of infections were in Eastern Europe past year. Every other person diagnosed had already developed Aids, an advanced stage of the infection.

The report, which CNN reported Tuesday, reveals that in 2017, of the almost 160,000 people diagnosed with HIV in Europe, 130,000 of those were in Eastern Europe - the highest ever in the latter region. Data need to be carefully considered as they depend on the transmission mode reported by the individuals.

A total of 1,073 people in the region are now living with the condition.

An estimated total of 102,000 people were living with HIV in the United Kingdom in 2017, with 8% (8,200) unaware of their infection, according to Public Health England (PHE). This translates into a decline from a rate of 6.9 per 100 000 population in 2008, to 6.2 per 100 000 in 2017.

In the rest of the former Soviet Union, new cases of infected drug users have fallen 45 percent to 6,218 a year in a decade, while new cases of heterosexual transmission increased 59 percent to nearly 18,000. The full extent and consequences of the lack of effective, quality HIV prevention and treatment services for adolescents are unknown because many countries do not publish HIV estimates.
