Two nooses and several hate signs were found hanging at the Mississippi State Capitol Monday around 7:15 a.m.

Gov. Phil Bryant said those responsible for hanging the nooses and placing the signs outside the Capitol would be "identified and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law" in an emailed statement to the Mississippi Clarion Ledger.

History will be made either way: Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, 59, would be the first woman ever elected to Congress from MS, or Democrat Mike Espy, 64, would be the state's first African American US senator since Reconstruction. MS is preparing for a U.S. Senate runoff Tuesday between Republican Sen.

"I've known her for a period of time now as senator", Trump told reporters Monday afternoon.

"We can't afford a senator who embarrasses us and reinforces the stereotypes we've worked so hard to overcome", the ad says.

Austin Johnson, from Fulton, wearing a Trump cap, said he did not know much about Hyde-Smith, a former state senator from Brookhaven, but he had planned to vote for her before the president's visit. "We need someone who respects lives of lynching victims", one sign read. She is concerned that many Republicans who didn't vote for Hyde-Smith in the November 6 primary remain disgruntled and will stay home today. Swennumson was always planning to vote for Espy, but felt more certain about her decision after Hyde-Smith's "public hanging" comment.

MS - which still has the Confederate battle emblem on its state flag - has a history of racially motivated lynchings. Officials say they will release pictures of the signs and nooses later Monday.

Espy is trying to become the first African-American to represent MS in the Senate since Reconstruction. Thad Cochran's six-year term. The victor will make history in Tuesday's election as either the first woman or first African American elected to the Senate from Mississippi.

The imagery was first obtained by a WLBT reporter, who received a call in the morning about the nooses and then notified Capitol Police. "I think it's been overblown", Smith said over a simmering plate of Chinese food at the Edgewater Mall in Biloxi, .

A video of Ms Hyde-Smith apparently encouraging voter suppression also emerged on Twitter.

Her campaign later said the comment was a joke and the video had been "selectively altered", the Washington Post reported.
