India finished third in the overall standings behind China and Taipei. Next, on November 8, 2017, she grabbed an unprecedented fifth gold medal at the ASBC Asian Confederation women's boxing championships held in Vietnam.

The last time this feisty Manipuri won a gold was in 2010 in Bridgetown.

The women's world championship has been running for 17 years.

The boxer was overwhelmed after the win and broke down after coming out of the ring.

"I am a little bit emotional today". I was under pressure and had to change my weight category also. Because of your love and support, I feel I will be able to qualify for 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

"Thank you for your love and support". What I can give you is a gold for the country.

Asked to compare the win here with earlier gold medals, the Manipuri said it was hard to remember.

It would be futile to compare her with male boxers who have won multiple world crowns. Her first four gold medals had come in pinweight category.

In 2001, she won silver, six times after that she won gold at the World Championship. Some of the her combinations caught Sonia off guard. Returning in 2016, with an eye on the Olympic Games later that year, she left the 48kg class spot to Sarjubala Devi and lost to Germany's Azize Nimani in the second round in the 51kg class in Astana, Kazakhstan.
