Top congressional Democrat Nancy Pelosi brushed off concern Thursday about simmering internal party opposition to her leadership, expressing confidence that she will be elected speaker of the House of Representatives.
Asked if she would "accept Republican help to win the gavel", Pelosi dismissively responded, "Oh, please". The full House floor vote to determine who will be the next Speaker will take place in January. She summed up some of the more important points: "One of the most rigorous aspects of planning is deciding EARLY what our priorities are and how we want to lead". There was even some talk of creating yet another leadership position ― an assistant majority whip ― though that seems to have been shot down by some members, including the last Democrat to have a position made for him, current assistant minority leader, Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.), who is running to stay at the No. 3 spot in Democratic leadership as the majority whip.
Pelosi downplayed the possibility that Fudge could enter the speakers' race at a weekly news conference in Washington. Fudge has indicated she will make formal decision soon. "Who has she endorsed?"
House Democrats will first vote for their leader on November 28 in a closed caucus meeting but a formal vote is also taken on the House floor, where Republicans will vote for their own candidate and Democrats theirs. Fudge said of Pelosi.
At least one Democrat, Marcia Fudge (Ohio), seems to be shedding some of the pretense and openly discussing a possible challenge to Pelosi.
"I don't hate Nancy".
