Florida has voted in favor of restoring felons' voting rights automatically on Tuesday night. The amendment will give voting rights back to more than a million people in the state but has two notable exceptions: those who have committed murder or a felony sex offence will not get the right to vote. The amendment passed overwhelmingly, with 64.5 percent of the vote. Many are laws that prevent people now in prison from voting while others are laws that prevent people from voting until they have finished parol or probation.

The majority of the amendments were put on the ballot by the Constitution Revision Commission, a group that meets every 20 years and has the authority to place measures directly on the ballot.

While the amendment had support from both liberal and conservative groups, outspoken support for the amendment mostly came from the Democrat side of the aisle among Florida politicians running for midterm elections.

"Today, when democratic values are on the defensive worldwide", he said, "Florida voters made a resoundingly clear statement that the state's shameful lifetime ban on voting is not consistent with the values of democracy".

"Remember, nothing is impossible when you have God on your side", said Meade's voicemail, who could not be reached on Wednesday morning but clearly sees this work as a calling. It was the first-ever statewide vote on this question, occurring as President Donald Trump's administration moves to weaken civil rights protections for transgender Americans.

Another gambling amendment Florida voters approved Tuesday was Amendment 3.

Still, on an evening when liberals and progressives are nervously awaiting results in Florida and around the country, a win for voting rights is a significant victory worthy of celebrating.

Jessica Jones (center) speaks to people gathered around the Ben & Jerry's "Yes on 4" Truck about Florida's Amendment 4 initiative at Charles Hadley Park in Miami, on October 22.

"When transgender rights are being threatened nationally, we absolutely must preserve the rights we have secured at the state level", said Carol Rose, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of MA.

Virginia, Iowa and Kentucky remain the only states with permanent disenfranchisement policies on the books. He ruled Florida's system that requires felons wait five years to petition the governor and three elected Cabinet members for the right to vote was "fatally flawed". Black people were five times more likely to be stripped of their voting rights than white voters in 2017.
