Boeing jet crashed in Indonesia after key sensor replaced

Indonesia to probe Lion Air after deadly plane crash Lion Air jet's airspeed indicator malfunctioned on four flights
| 08 November, 2018, 07:06

Mr Tjahjono has said 69 hours of recorded data from 19 flights, including the one that crashed, had been downloaded successfully from a partly damaged flight data recorder recovered on Thursday.

The special bulletin sent to operators was about a sensor problem flagged by Indonesian safety officials investigating the crash of a Lion Air 737 that killed 189 people last week.

"There were four flights in all that suffered a problem with the airspeed indicator", NTSC head Soerjanto Tjahjono told reporters.

An unnamed source familiar with the Boeing's technical bulletin described how the sensor error could cause pilots to lose control of the plane.

Well over 100 body bags have been retrieved, and each body bag could contain remains from more than one individual.

While search teams scouring the waters managed to bring up the flight data recorder, a separate recorder that captures cockpit conversations and background noise is still buried in the seabed where the plane plunged.

The finding was announced shortly after an emotional news conference in which victims' relatives confronted government officials and Lion Air's co-founder, calling for accountability. "We ask NTSB and Boeing to work on this to prevent same accident happening in the future".

On that flight, from Bali to Jakarta, the two sensors disagreed.

"But it is quite straightforward and we train for this all the time", the captain said. "We are trying the best we can with all we have. we are not giving up".

The Lion Air aircraft, with 189 people on board, crashed into the Java Sea off Karawang, West Java, 13 minutes after taking off from Soekarno-Hatta International Airpor.

The ministry had previously removed several Lion Air executives and technicians, saying they were needed to help authorities in the investigation.

The accident has resurrected concerns about Indonesia's poor air safety record, which until recently saw its carriers facing years-long bans from entering European Union and United States airspace.

This measures at what angle an aircraft is flying and air is passing over the wings.

Angry and distraught family members vented their frustration at the authorities for their lack of coordination and failure to provide information, with Muhammad Bambang Sukandar, the father of one of the victims, Pangky Pradana Sukandar, asking Rusdi Kirana, founder of Lion Air who was among the audience, to stand up. There were no survivors.

Now Boeing is warning pilots and airlines, including Air Canada and WestJet, that they could experience similar issues with their Boeing 737 Max planes, the same model as the Lion Air plane that crashed.

A preliminary report on the cause of the accident is expected at the end of the month. Police medical experts have received almost 140 body bags of human remains and have identified 14 victims.

Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) chief Muhammad Syaugi told reporters on Wednesday morning (Nov 7): "We chose to extend our evacuation operation another three days, specifically for Basarnas".

Body parts are still being recovered and searchers continue to hunt for the cockpit voice recorder.

Boeing said it is continuing to work with the Indonesian investigation.

But what is disturbing is why Lion Air didn't pull this plane from service after repeated problems.
