Colton Treu, was identified as the driver of the truck that left the roadway on County Road P near the Highway 29 overpass, crashing into a Girl Scout Troop that was picking up trash in the ditch along the roadway.

Treu fled the scene, but turned himself later Saturday, according to the Lake Hallie Police Department.

The driver, 21-year-old Colten Treu, later surrendered to authorities after police launched a search for the vehicle.

Treu was arrested on four counts of homicide by negligent use of a motor vehicle, five counts of hit and run and four counts of homicide while intoxicated (use of inhalants), police said.

The community of Chippewa Falls gathered Sunday evening at Halmstad Elementary, where hundreds of people remembered the lives of the victims in Saturday's tragedy.

The group had adopted the rural road and performed the community service along it before, something they did while wearing bright yellow safety vests and accompanied by adults. "We will be providing ongoing support for both students (and) families and staff for as long as needed".


A Ford F-150 pickup truck crossed through a lane of traffic and into a ditch where the Girl Scout troop was picking up trash, killing three and an adult woman, officials said. The driver, Colten Treu, sped away, but later surrendered to authorities. Two other scouts were injured.

Girl Scouts chief executive Sylvia Acevedo paid tribute to the girls and the woman in a statement on Sunday, saying "our hearts are broken" over the tragedy.

At a little before noon on Saturday, Treu struck and killed three girl scouts and one adult who was supervising the girls as the picked up trash by the side of a country road. He took off but later turned himself in. Two girls and a parent died at the scene. The other was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

"Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes asks that you please keep the Nokomis Service Area volunteers and families in your thoughts and prayers as they grapple with this senseless loss", the organization said in a statement.

The four were killed while cleaning garbage out of a ditch in Lake Hallie. An investigation and search for the vehicle is underway.

He will be charged with four counts of homicide, Lake Hallie police Sgt. Daniel Sokup said.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact the Chippewa County Communications Center.
