The blacklist: Targets of new United States sanctions against Iran

Iranian Crowds Chant 'Death To Israel,' 'Down With U.S.' 'Death to America': Iranians take to the streets on the eve of US sanctions

The move restored US sanctions that were lifted under a 2015 nuclear deal negotiated by the administration of President Barack Obama, and added 300 new designations in Iran's oil, shipping, insurance and banking sectors.

The accord provided Iran with billions of dollars in relief from global sanctions in exchange for sweeping curbs on and inspections of its nuclear program.

The Administration has granted waivers to eight countries that have reduced their oil purchases from Iran but not stopped them entirely.

Pompeo emphasized how increased USA sanctions on Iran leading up to today's announcement had ensured "that Iran is not able to increase its revenue from oil as its exports plummet", while keeping prices stable for the American consumer.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on November 2 said that, despite granting the waivers, Washington would "aggressively enforce" the sanctions.

President Donald Trump announced in May that his administration was withdrawing from what he called the "worst ever" agreement negotiated by the United States.

Iranian state media said millions turned out in towns and cities, swearing allegiance to the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, although the BBC was unable to independently verify this figure. Some German companies are already unable to access funds paid by their Iranian clients.

While in a dramatic escalation of rhetoric, the Iranian President said the country now faces a "war situation".

Oil markets have been preparing for the sanctions for months.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani earlier struck a defiant tone, saying the country will "continue selling oil". It was also allowed to continue financial transactions with the Middle East country, it said.

It also covers an Iranian airline, Iran Air, and more than 65 of its aircraft. The SPV will be a European-owned, Luxemburg-based financial clearinghouse, that enables payments to and from Iran while bypassing US-connected companies.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said USA "bullying" was backfiring by making Washington more isolated, a reference to other world powers opposed to the initiative.

The United States said on Friday it will temporarily allow eight importers to keep buying Iranian oil when it re-imposes sanctions, aimed at forcing Iran to curb its nuclear, missile and regional activities.

He hammered the Iran nuclear deal on the campaign trail, and rebuffed pleas by Mrs May and other world leaders to stick to it once in power.

Pompeo did say that temporary waivers would be granted to three unnamed non-proliferation organizations, who he said were working to oversee Iran's civil nuclear program.

"The aim is to drive Iranian oil exports to zero".

Speaking at a daily news briefing in Beijing, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said China's lawful trade cooperation with Iran should be respected, and expressed regret at the re-imposition of sanctions.

The move brings the total of Iranian-related targets sanctioned under the Trump administration to 900 in less than two years and represents a significant escalation of Washington's efforts to place economic pressure on the Iranian regime. The U.N.'s atomic energy agency, which was tasked with monitoring the implementation of the agreement, has certified in multiple reports that Iran is in compliance.
