Today Amazon announced that they are offering free shipping to everyone in the United States with no minimum purchase needed. However, during the holiday season Amazon is adding an extra perk for them.

Amazon says it will offer free holiday shipping to all of its customers on hundreds of millions of items, a potentially costly competitive move created to keep pace with similar moves by the company's retail rivals.

It marks the first time in recent memory Amazon has removed the minimum order requirement promotionally for its free super-saver shipping tier, which has gone up and down over the years, from a high of $49 to its current low of $25. The company expects sales for the fourth quarter to be between $66.5 billion and $72.5 billion.

"Free shipping is one of the easiest promotions to execute for a retailer, and is certainly popular among consumers, however it is a very costly initiative to undertake", Moody's Lead Retail Analyst Charlie O'Shea said in a statement.

Moreover, the retail giant will also feature "Lightning Deals" on its site that will discount products for a "short period of time".

The company's shares fell more than 3 percent following the announcement. Amazon didn't say when the promotion would end, but described the duration as "limited".

Last month, Target announced that from November 1 to December 22, shipping would be free with no minimum spend required.

About $720 billion in sales are up for grabs for the Black Friday shopping weekend, according to the National Retail Federation.

As part of the Black Friday event, Amazon will offer "Deals of the Day" throughout that will see dramatic price cuts on "must-have electronics, toys and fashion to sports, beauty, home items and more".
