An eight-second surveillance video released by Chongqing city police on its Weibo social media account shows the two arguing and grappling with each other in the moments before the bus suddenly veered across oncoming traffic and off the bridge Sunday morning. However, Liu did not get off and later asked the driver to stop the bus when she realised she missed her destination.

China is still reeling from a tragic incident in which a bus swerved off a bridge, plummeting 60 meters into the icy waters of the Yangtze river, killing all 15 people on board but now shocking footage has revealed the cause.

A Wanzhou police statement said the driver and the passenger broke the law with their actions because they seriously endangered public safety.

Thirteen bodies were found and two people were listed as missing. The driver turned his head back several times during the argument. He then lost control of the bus.

As the quarrel escalated, the statement said, the woman hit the driver on the head with her cellphone.

The bus collided with an oncoming vehicle before smashing through the guardrail and into the Yangtze River on Sunday.

A floating crane pulled the wreckage of the bus from the river, Wednesday evening, after it sank to a reported depth of 70 meters (230 feet) underwater. The driver, with one hand on the wheel, hits back.

The passenger and driver have been identified by their surname as 48-year-old Liu and 42-year-old Ran, both from Wanzhou, police added.
