Human Pressures Have Shrunk Wildlife Populations by 60 Percent

Humans are wiping out life of earth says WWF with many species in danger of disappearing Earth’s wildlife population declined by 60 per cent in 44 years: WWF

In this landmark anniversary edition, 20 years after its original publication, the Living Planet Report 2018 provides a platform for the best science, cutting-edge research and diverse voices on the impact of humans on the health of our Earth, with inputs from more than 50 experts from academia, policy, worldwide development and conservation organizations across the world.

This year's report cited population increases of pandas, dolphins, and gorillas as positive signs of environmental work in action, and credited legal frameworks like the US Endangered Species Act with helping listed species avoid extinction.

The report states that since 1970, 60 percent of all animals with a backbone (fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals) have disappeared from the planet. "Nature globally provides services worth around $125 trillion a year. we need more research, efforts from government, business and financial sectors, researchers and conservation communities to revive the planet", said Ravi Singh, Secretary General and CEO, WWF-India.

In Canada, the depletion in wildlife is a result of the following factors: habitat loss, climate change, pollution, invasive species, unsustainable harvest, and cumulative and cascading effects.

Wildlife populations have, on average, decreased by 60 percent since 1970, a new report by the World Wildlife Federations found. The report points to human activities causing habitat loss and degradation - brought on by the excessive use of wildlife such as overfishing and over-hunting.

The strongly worded report claims that humanity has thus far "failed the natural world" with declines in freshwater ecosystems especially pronounced. Tropical areas have experienced the worst declines, with an 89 per cent fall in populations monitored in Latin America and the Caribbean since 1970. The index says half of the species in Canada saw a decline, and of those populations that fell, the dip was by 83 per cent.

The 145-page study covers everything from the importance of nature in our lives and the world's economies to global threats and pressures to what future we want for our planet.

Unbridled consumption has decimated global wildlife, triggered a mass extinction and exhausted Earth's capacity to accommodate humanity's expanding appetites, the conservation group WWF warned ON Tuesday. "We have to get it right this time".

What is increasingly clear is that human development and wellbeing are reliant on healthy natural systems, and we can not continue to enjoy the former without the latter. The "shocking truth", said Barrett, is that the wildlife crash is continuing unabated.

WWF United States President Carter Roberts said it was time to balance consumption with the needs of nature. "Nature is not a "nice to have" - it is our life-support system". This can galvanize public and private action to protect and restore global biodiversity and nature and bend the curve on the devastating trends highlighted in the report.
