Federer's semifinals opponent will be seventh-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev, a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victor over Greek fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the day's final match.

Before this event, Copil never had beaten a top 10 opponent in six tries.

The two final places will be decided at the Paris Masters, where Federer will attempt to become the first man to reach a century of ATP tournament victories.

Medvedev's repeated errors made it easy for his esteemed opponent to wrap up the opening set and there was another break at the start of the second to set the tone.

Federer next plays Jan-Lennard Struff on Thursday.

Seventh-seeded Daniil Medvedev, who is also in Federer's half of the draw, beat Maximilian Marterer of Germany 6-3, 7-5.

"It would be great to win my 99th career title here in Basel".

Despite the win, Federer will be displeased with himself for dropping his own serve on five occasions, including three times in the second set.

"I want to congratulate Kei on a great week", Anderson said on court after receiving the trophy.

"You have to focus on the match you are playing and hope the next day that you will be fine", he said in anticipation of possibly playing the next two days to win the event again.

Just as Federer looked to be settling into form after almost 30 unforced errors in the opening set, more disruption ensued. The inspired Romanian's booming serves and lobs created tension St Jakobshalle but the local favourite won five straight games to complete another memorable win.

But 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer roared back, first levelling the set before securing the crucial break of serve to move 5-4 ahead.

Federer broke back in the sixth game after a poor drop shot from Copil, with both players serving well after that to reach a tie break.

"It's been an unbelievable week for me so far", Copil said. But he finally lost his nerve in the 12th game when two unforced errors in a row handed Federer the match.

This was Federer's 18th consecutive winning match at a tournament where he is unbeaten since 2013 and is an eight time victor.
