Trump says US to issue 'report' on missing Saudi journalist

The kingdom calls the allegation "baseless", but has not offered any evidence to explain why Mr Khashoggi simply walked out of the consulate and disappeared though his fiancee waited outside for him.

Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to get documents for his forthcoming marriage.

The president tells "Fox & Friends" that Khashoggi "went in and it doesn't look like he came out" from the consulate. He has written multiple columns recently in The Washington Post where he criticized Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

"We have nothing to hide", the prince said, claiming that the journalist exited the building "after a few minutes or one hour".

Turkish police investigating the case had said in a statement on Saturday that 15 Saudis, including several officials, had arrived in Istanbul on two planes and had entered the consulate while Khashoggi was inside.

He said then that Saudi Arabia is before "serious transformation that is going to involve and affect every Saudi". It remains unclear when the search will take place.

In an op-ed published by the Post late Tuesday, Khashoggi's fiancée wrote that the October 2 visit to the Saudi consulate was Khashoggi's second in the space of a few days.

Since his disappearance, many have sought to discover what happened to Khashoggi.

"We're looking at it very, very seriously".

Friends of Khashoggi told the Washington Post that for several months, senior Saudi officials were offering him protection, "even a high-level job working for the government" if the critic returned to the kingdom.

Mr Khashoggi had been living in the U.S., where he contributed articles to the Washington Post's opinion section. But Trump is expressing reservations over calls to withhold further US arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

Leman Yurtsever, a protest organiser and board member of the Human Rights Association in Turkey, said on Tuesday that they gathered by the diplomatic mission to defend the rights and safety of journalists.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan meanwhile asked Saudi Arabia to provide CCTV images to back up its assertion that Khashoggi had left the consulate safely.

Journalists and activists gathered outside the Saudi consulate on Monday demanding information on Khashoggi's fate.

Trump visited Saudi Arabia on his first global trip as president and announced $110 billion in proposed arms sales.

President Donald Trump says the U.S.is looking into the fate of a Saudi writer missing and feared murdered but expressed reservations over calls to withhold further USA arms sales to Saudi Arabia, warning that such a move "would be hurting us". Khashoggi also is a Washington Post contributor. However, all nine apparently checked out the same day and returned to the airport, where they flew on to the UAE.

Saudi prince Khalid bin Farhan al-Saud, who has fled to Germany after the empowerment of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, called on people to overthrow the current rulers in Riyadh after the recent murder of prominent journalist Jamal Khashoggi by the Al-e Saud.
