Haley had expressed some frustration that her voice had been diminished as the two men became the aggressive new faces of Trump's worldwide policy, the official said.
Haley, who is not personally wealthy, hinted in her resignation letter to Trump that she is headed to the private sector.
Haley - who called herself "such a lucky girl to have been able to lead the state that raised me and to serve a country I love" - also detailed what she said were the administration's accomplishments on the world stage during her watch.
"I want to tell you, the people...know that Ivanka would be dynamite", Trump said.
Sitting beside Trump in the Oval Office, Haley said her 18-month stint at the United Nations had been "an honor of a lifetime" and said she would stay on until the end of the year.
Her U.N. counterparts described her as charming and yet very tough.
White House officials had sought to put a hold on Trump's record-setting turnover in the run-up to the November 6 elections, with aides being asked months ago to step down or commit to stay through Election Day to avoid adding to a sense of turmoil. "Jared and I are grateful for her friendship - a true blessing in our lives!"
Haley also led the White House charge against the UN Human Rights Council, which Republicans, and some Democrats, have criticized for giving seats to countries with terrible human rights records: Venezuela, China, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, among others.
"I can't say enough good things about Jared and Ivanka", Haley said.
Haley was confirmed as U.N. Ambassador four days after Trump was inaugurated in January 2017.
Sanford, a fellow former SC governor who has been allies with Haley in the past but is now an administration critic, said of the story: "Something doesn't smell right".
Also last month, she publicly accused Russian Federation of cheating on United Nations sanctions imposed on North Korea: "Its violations are not one-offs".
And even if 2020 isn't an option, Ms Haley is only 46-years-old.
Trump told reporters that he has heard his daughter Ivanka Trump's name discussed for the post, but said if he selected her he'd be accused of nepotism.
One official noted that Trump and Haley first talked about her leaving about six months ago, shortly after Pompeo and Bolton were appointed.
Dina Powell, a former deputy national security adviser earlier in Trump's administration, has also been mentioned in USA media reports as a possible successor, as has Richard Grenell, now the US ambassador to Germany and formerly a spokesman for John Bolton when he served as United Nations ambassador in the early 2000s.
Haley has one child in college and another approaching college age, and she has the potential to make much more money in the business world. Trump tweeted that "The people of SC are embarrassed by Nikki Haley".
She outlasted Trump's first secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, who, unlike Haley, generated friction with Trump: on substance, on style, on mannerisms, and other matters.
As governor, she developed a national reputation as a racial conciliator who led the charge to bring down the Confederate flag at the Statehouse and guided SC through one of its darkest moments, the massacre at a black church.
Among those leaving are a group of students attending an Islamic competition in the Sumatran city of Medan. Humanitarian agencies had been in communication with the government and were ready to help, he said.
