Racing NSW officials have named six potential emergencies for slot-holders for The Everest this Saturday, while they have also suspended betting on Tuesday afternoon after the barrier draw was conducted.

A plan to project a racing advertisement on the famed sails of the Sydney Opera House has sparked controversy in Australia.

An estimated 2,000 people bearing torches surrounded the base of the Opera House on the foreshore of the harbour and attempted to interrupt the display.

Broadcaster Alan Jones was accused of bullying in an on-air interview with Opera House chief executive Louise Herron, an accusation he initially refuted before publicly apologising. Herron initially refused to allow Jones' racing mates to advertise gambling on the sails of the Opera House.

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian says she's been left upset by the furore surrounding the Sydney Opera House being used to promote a horse race and has called for people to maintain some perspective.

Since the NSW Government directed the Opera House to allow the promotional material on racing to be projected, the backlash over the decision has reached a boiling point.

"I used some words in these programs about the Everest, and the Opera House, and Louise, which in hindsight I now most regret hearing, having heard the impact they've clearly had on some people", he told his 2GB listeners this morning.

They then shone bright lights onto the barrier draw results and from across the other side of Circular Quay, the numbers of the race horses displayed on the heritage building were obscured.

The Opera House did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but has previously directed Reuters to the state government.

The NSW Heritage Council, an adviser to the government on heritage issues, said it was disappointed with the government's decision to turn the "international architectural masterpiece" into a billboard.
