Nawaz breaks political silence after Shehbaz's arrest

Pakistan: PMLN chief Shehbaz Sharif arrested in water scam Pakistan opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif arrested ahead of polls

Sharif, the brother of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, was arrested on charges of corruption relating to a low-priced housing scheme in Punjab province, Shahzad Saleem- the head of a regional anti-corruption body- told AFP.

According to reports, (PML-N) president arrived in court in an armoured vehicle under the heavy securities.

The meeting between the brothers comes a day after NAB obtained a 10-day physical remand of former Punjab chief minister accused of corruption in Ashiana Housing case.

On July 6, the accountability court had announced the verdict in the Avenfield reference, sentencing Mr Sharif to 10 years in prison for owning assets beyond known source income and to one year for not cooperating with NAB.

A NAB prosecutor told the judge that Shehbaz had "misused his powers" as chief minister of Punjab province and granted the contract to a favorite company, causing "losses of millions of rupees to the national exchequer".

The protesters reminded that Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Safdar and Captain (r) Safdar were arrested before the general elections but were released afterwards as nothing could be proved against them.

A delegation of opposition MNAs met National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser at his residence on Saturday and submitted a requisition request for an NA session on PML-N President and leader of the opposition Shehbaz Sharif's arrest.

Scores of party leaders, meanwhile, had earlier gathered outside the Accountability Court in Lahore, chanting slogans in favour of Shehbaz.

Nawaz termed his brother's arrest a worst political victimisation.

She said her party is being victimized in the name of accountability. "We are assessing the situation and consulting party leadership to prepare astrategy for a future course of action", said Malik Ahmed Khan, spokesman from Sharif's PML-N party. Shehbaz Sharif is being probed in other corruption cases as well. Shahbaz's close confidant Ahad Cheea and Nawaz's principal secretary Fawad Hasan Fawad are already in the NAB's custody in the Ashiana housing scheme scam.

The Panama Papers case is about alleged money laundering by Sharif in the 1990s when he twice served as Pakistan's prime minister to purchase assets in London.
