First lady Melania Trump, in the third stop of her Africa tour, fed baby elephants Friday at a national park in Kenya to highlight wildlife conservation efforts. The school is among those in the landlocked country that receive education assistance from the U.S. Agency for International Development, including textbooks.

Mrs. Trump is on her first extended solo global trip as first lady.

Her solo safari, which ends in Egypt, has shown her interest in conservation, education, children's welfare and tourism.

Children living at The Nest in Nairobi greeted her with singing and dancing, and it didn't take long before the typically reserved USA first lady gave in to the moment.

It's part of her "Be Best" campaign, geared at focusing on improvements to women's and children's health around the world - and will see her touring Malawi, Kenya and Egypt.

Regardless of the controversy surrounding the Trump administration and Melania Trump's extended family, her communications director Stephanie Grisham told the New York Times that this happier Melania Trump is simply the first lady she knows.

He also called for the elimination of basic education funding for Malawi, proposed a $170 million cut to the State Department's worldwide maternal and child health programs and tried to nix $425 million in US assistance to the Global Fund, which helps combat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. It seems unfair since that is not what a first lady's trip should be about.

The first lady laughed after one elephant in the group of 18 made a sudden move and she momentarily lost her footing.

Following the school visit, Mrs. Trump met with Ambassador Virginia Palmer and the Embassy staff, thanking them for their service on behalf of the United States and their continued efforts in Malawi.

Melania Trump's spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, did not respond to emails seeking comment on the clash between the focus of the first lady's trip and her husband's policies.

Others are not convinced the White House sees Africa as "extremely important", the first lady's trip notwithstanding.

Before coming to Kenya, Mrs Trump started her African tour in Ghana early in this week before proceeding to Malawi.

"I was heartened to spend time with the students and was honored to donate school supplies and soccer balls", she said.

One said #MELANIATOO, with the "ME" in bold black.

As CNN reporter Kate Bennett tweeted, a small group of protesters - who may or may not have been Americans living near the US embassy - held up signs with #MeToo-inspired slogans as Trump drove past.

She arrived in Ghana on Tuesday morning.
