Trump celebrates Kavanaugh victory at Kansas political rally

Donald Trump's court pick generated a controversy that captured the nation's attention in a way that few political issues do.

Senator Lisa Murkowski, the only Republican opposing Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court, used a quirky Senate procedure in Saturday's confirmation vote to help fellow GOP Senator Steve Daines, who supports the nominee but will be at his daughter's wedding in Montana.

"I thought that Susan was incredible yesterday", Trump told reporters Saturday as he left the White House to fly to Kansas for a political rally.

In fact, Ms. Blasey Ford's account has been rebuffed by three people she says were at the party where she was assaulted.

In an interview shortly before the Senate is set to vote on confirming Kavanaugh, McConnell said GOP members of the Judiciary Committee made the decision in a meeting with two other Republicans who were at the time withholding their support, Senator Susan Collins of ME and Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

In the end, Republicans were able to use their monopoly on political power on Capitol Hill and the White House to muscle through the confirmation, which was almost derailed by Christine Blasey Ford's allegations that the judge assaulted her when they were teenagers in the 1980s.

With Republicans controlling the chamber by a narrow 51-49, Collins' "yes" vote essentially assured a minimum of 50 votes for Kavanaugh.

Trump also mentioned that he spoke to Collins, but did not provide additional details.

"We worked hard, and we got ourselves the finest legal minds, one of the finest human beings", he said of Kavanaugh.

"I'm heartened today", she adds. They said he also seemed ready to rule for Trump if federal authorities probing his 2016 campaign's alleged connections to Russian Federation try to pursue him in court.

She said on the Senate floor late Friday that Kavanaugh is "a good man" but his "appearance of impropriety has become unavoidable".

Talking to reporters aboard Air Force One on his way to a rally in Kansas, Trump told reporters, "I'm a hundred percent". And the Federal Bureau of Investigation has done an excellent job. He went on to urge the crowd to go to the polls next month, telling them they "have a chance to stop the radical Democrats" by electing Republicans to Congress.

Trump and the Republicans said the probe supported their contention that Ford's allegations were "uncorroborated", but Democrats - and Ford - said the investigation was inadequate.

Mr Trump also said he was "100% certain" that the woman who had accused Mr Kavanaugh of sexual assault, Christine Blasey Ford, had named the wrong person. He has denied the allegation.

Ultimately with no evidence from 36 years ago, the Ford-Kavanaugh hearing convinced only one Republican and one Democrat to switch sides.

"We're very honored that he was able to withstand this terrible, disgusting attack by the Democrats".

When asked Saturday about his message to women across the country who feel divested or not believed, Trump replied, "I don't think they are".

As one of just two Republican women in the Senate who favour abortion rights - Collins is the other - and an opponent of the Republican push to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act previous year, Murkowski was seen as one of a handful of senators who could vote either way on Kavanaugh, even before the allegations against him emerged publicly in September.

"Obviously, I was really sad about the whole process", Flake said before Graham smashed a pie in his face and exclaimed, "Seriously, this one is about the fans". "Brett Kavanaugh is a man of great character and intellect".

As for the women who protested the Kavanaugh vote, Murkowski said, "I was closing my eyes and praying".

Then, at one point during the far-ranging interview that followed, Pirro - who was not short on the flattery throughout - asked Trump about the rally moment in MS when he mocked Christine Blasey Ford.
