Toyota announces new recall of 2.4 million hybrid cars Toyota Just Announced Its Second Massive Recall of Prius Hybrids in a Month
| 07 October, 2018, 13:06

Toyota is now in the process of recalling around 2.4 million cars worldwide over fears that a faulty component could cause some vehicles to stall without warning.

In response to The Straits Times' queries, a spokesman for Borneo Motors (Singapore) - the sole distributor for Toyota here - said the recall involved 744 Prius hybrid vehicles produced between October 2008 and November 2014.

Another 830,000 are in North America, 290,000 in Europe, 3,000 in China, and the rest in other parts of the world.

Toyota recalled some hybrid cars for the same reason between 2014 and 2015, but a different problem with the program has been found.

They said that power steering and braking would still work but stalling at a fast speed could increase risks of a crash.

The problem identified arises when the cars fail to enter 'failsafe driving mode as intended'.

The recall was resulted after a technical fault was uncovered which could cause the vehicle to stall at high speeds.

It also said that although it had received three reports in Japan related to the issue, it was unaware of any crashes in the country. In the case of Toyota's latest recall, some of the hybrids mentioned have undergone two prior recalls to fix related issues.

Toyota Ireland said they will be contacting all affected customers directly by mail to arrange to have their vehicles checked.

The auto giant last month issued a recall for 1.03 million cars globally over an issue related to wiring that could cause fires in vehicles.

In a statement, it said that the safety recall is on certain Toyota Prius, Prius+ and Auris hybrid vehicles.

Toyota has issued several recalls in the past over issues including faults with floor mats, breaks and airbags.
