Peace prize for duo's fight against sexual violence

The Latest Pompeo seeks allied unity in dealing with NKorea Yazidi activist Nadia Murad wins joint Nobel Peace Prize for anti-rape efforts

The pair won the award "for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict", Nobel committee chairwoman Berit Reiss-Andersen said in unveiling the winners in Oslo.

Murad, a survivor of the Islamic State group's brutal campaign of enslavement, torture and rape of Yazidi women, has campaigned for the freedom of her people since being released from nearly three years in captivity.

This year, the Nobel Committee, based in Oslo, Norway, received 216 nominations for individuals and 115 organisations.

In a video posted on the Facebook page of the hospital he founded in eastern DR Congo in 1999, co-workers and admirers can be seen swarming around the 63-year-old doctor after he emerged from the operating theatre, cheering, ululating wildly and hugging him as he slowly made his way past them.

The choice of two campaigners against sexual violence in war will highlight an issue that has been marginalised for decades.

Alessandra Velluci said "this is a cause that is very close to the United Nations and as you know we have a special representative who is also working towards this, and I'm sure that this Nobel Peace Prize will help advance the cause of ending sexual violence as a weapon of conflict".

Iraq's new President Barham Salih congratulated on Friday Yazidi activist Nadia Murad for winning the Nobel Peace Prize.

"It means a lot, not just for me, for all of these women in Iraq and all the world", she said in a phone interview with the Nobel prize website after sharing the prize with Congolese doctor Denis Mukwege for their work in fighting sexual violence in conflicts around the globe.

The committee said that Denis Mukwege "has spent large parts of his adult life helping the victims of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo".

Ms Murad was 21 in 2014 when ISIS militants attacked the village where she had grown up in northern Iraq. Her mother and six of her brothers were killed; Murad, along with many other young women from the village, were kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery. In 2016, at the age of 23, Murad was named the UN's first Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking.

Last year's prize was awarded to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.
