Amazon to Raise Its Minimum U.S. Wage to $15 an Hour

The new floor, which will take effect November 1, applies to more than 250,000 employees who work in the company's network of warehouses, logistics depots and customer service call centers, as well as the more than 100,000 temporary hires the company brings on to handle the holiday season's uptick in orders.
Amazon has raised its minimum wage for British and American workers, in a major milestone for campaigners pushing for pay increases to tackle rising levels of poverty and inequality in both countries. One of its harshest critics is U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders.
Jay Carney, Amazon's senior vice president for global corporate affairs, pledged that the company would advocate a minimum wage increase "that will have a profound impact on the lives of tens of millions of people and families across this country". Its starting pay is $10 an hour at a warehouse in Austin, Texas, and $13.50 an hour in Robbinsville, New Jersey.
The $15 per hour wage will include all types of employee: full-time, part-time, seasonal and temporary.
In two decades the company expanded far beyond its bookseller beginnings, combining its world-spanning retail operation with less flashy but very profitable advertising and cloud computing businesses. Target recently vowed to raise its minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2020.
The company's announcement comes just ahead of the holiday hiring season.
That could be good news for numerous Internet giant's workers across North Carolina.
Workers have been protesting against fast food chains like McDonald's Corp and demanding wage increases since 2012. The federal minimum wage hasn't risen since 2009.
Amazon shares, trading lower before the company announced the wage hike, were down less than 0.3 percent at $1,997.75 in trading before the bell.
