Once hailed the second coming to Woods, McIlroy will get a chance to chase down the 14-time major champion while playing alongside him.

As Tiger Woods strode down the 18th fairway at at Atlanta's East Lake club, thousands of baying fans following close behind, the world of golf and beyond was once again in thrall to the U.S. star.

The first six of those birdies came in the opening seven holes as Woods, who had been tied for the lead with Rose on seven under par, made a blistering start.

The run came with a mix of superb iron play and rock-solid putting, including a 21-foot birdie putt on the fourth.

He was denied a bigger lead after bogeys on the ninth and 16th holes. Once I got the ball on the green, it was done.

At Augusta in April Woods described himself as a "walking miracle" and says he now realizes just how lucky he is.

"It's going to be fun", he said of the pairing with McIlroy. He finished three clear of Billy Horschel and had galleries in their thousands, and millions watching worldwide, following his every move.

Tiger Woods has won a PGA Tour event for the first time in over five years after victory at the Tour Championship.

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy will be paired together in Sunday's final group at East Lake Country Club, Woods holding a three shot lead over his younger rival with just 18 holes of season 2018 remaining.

"Despite an influx of talented young players in recent years, golf just hasn't been the same since Woods went away, his brilliant career derailed by debilitating injuries and personal demons", wrote Paul Newberry, sports columnist for the Associated Press news agency. "That helps. I don't have to shoot 63 or 64 and hope I get help". But on Sunday, nearly everything felt different, even as Woods regained a big piece of his past. Projections have Woods climbing as high as No. 13 in the world - less than 12 months since he returned to golf in December as the No. 1199 ranked golfer in the world. It rolled past Dustin Johnson, looked like it was going to settle on Tiger Woods, and then made a final tick to rest on Justin Rose.

The 42-year-old Woods - who had spinal fusion surgery less than a year ago - had not won a title since August 2013, but claimed his 80th PGA Tour title in Atlanta, parring the final round to finish 11-under.

The golfing world has been waiting for the moment the 42-year-old returns to his winning ways, and there's an incredible statistic backing him to do so.

That tie for sixth at the Open Championship and solo second finish at the PGA Championship proved that Tiger Woods is definitely back and still more than capable of competing in major championships.

The next stop for Woods is to board a plane with the rest of his USA teammates for France and the Ryder Cup.
