The fifth Oculus Connect conference is going on now, and it gave viewers their first look at the next iteration of Facebook'sVR headset: the Oculus Quest. Oculus calls this tech Insight, and it's testing it in hundreds of different home spaces so that it can detect as many floors and objects as possible.
Oculus Quest will also feature two redesigned controllers that have been fitted with touchpad control. There will be roughly 50 titles available at launch to leverage the power of the Oculus Touch, including Robo Recall and The Climb (which is a climbing simulator). The less powerful Oculus Go, which the company unveiled at last year's Connect, only has one motion controller.
Instead of relying on external trackers like the Oculus Rift, the Oculus Quest's inside-out tracking system can monitor your position from within the headset itself. But the dream of an exceptional VR headset that doesn't tangle isn't quite there yet - the performance and graphics quality can't compare to wired systems. The display resolution is said to be 1600×1440 - Oculus' blog post refers to the Quest as using the same "best-of-class" optics as the Oculus Go, but this may refer to the lenses, not the actual per-eye resolution. Facebook's goal was to provide users with a completely untethered and free experience in virtual reality, combining the capabilities of the Oculus Rift with the freedom of the Oculus Go which launched earlier this year.
The headset is said to rival the Oculus Rift in performance while not being tethered to a computer. Facebook has said the addition of this third device completes their roadmap, and that app compatibility will be retained for future products in each of these segmentations (e.g., Oculus Go apps will run on Oculus Go 2).
The Quest will also ship with the same Touch controllers people use for their Rift devices, Zuckerberg said.
