The outer bands of wind and rain from a weakened but still deadly Hurricane Florence began lashing North Carolina on Thursday as the monster storm moved in for an extended stay along the Southeastern coast, promising to drench the homes of as many as 10 million people with huge amounts of rain. But authorities warned it will still be an extremely unsafe hurricane.
At 11:00 local time, Florence was over the Atlantic Ocean about 230km east-southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina, and moving northwest at 17km/h, the NHC said.
The Category 1 storm's outer bands lashed towns on the barrier islands and on some of the Tar Heel State's rivers, as the center of the cyclone moved to make a probable Friday landfall.
