Japan’s punk billionaire Yusaku Maezawa revealed as SpaceX moon tourist

SpaceX booked'world's first private passenger SpaceX gets first private passenger for moon trip

"I hope that this project will inspire the dreamer within each of us".

"Ultimately this BFR system is meant to carry anyone to orbit, and to the Moon, and to Mars, so he (Maezawa) is ultimately paying for every citizen to travel to other planets" Musk added.

Musk called it "an important step toward enabling access for everyday people who dream of travelling to space".

The Japanese billionaire declined to say how much he paid for the Lunar mission, but Musk said it was "a lot of money" that'll go toward making space flight a reality for all humans.

SpaceX had previously announced in 2017 that two then-unnamed passengers had booked passage for a Lunar flyby in a Falcon Heavy rocket that was to launch in 2018.

In April, Musk posted a picture to Instagram (since removed) of what he described as the "main body tool" for his company's BFR interplanetary spaceship.

No one has gone to the moon since the Apollo astronauts, with the last trip in 1972. As such, reports Forbes, SpaceX has announced that he will be the first paying passenger on its BFR spacecraft destined for a trip around the moon.

Maezawa said at SpaceX's headquarters in California that he will invite six to eight world-renowned artists to join him on the weeklong flight orbiting the moon.

He explained: "They [artists] will be asked to create something after they return to Earth".

The group will blast off in SpaceX's Big Falcon Rocket (BFR), with total costs expected to hit $5 billion.

It's unclear what kind of training Maezawa will go through before touring the moon.

The BFR spacecraft's shape is reminiscent of the space shuttle, the bus-like U.S. spaceships that carried astronauts to space 135 times from 1981 to 2011.

As of today, only 24 humans - all Americans have traveled from Earth to the moon.

The Japanese billionaire who will become the first ever private tourist to fly around the moon.

Musk said the BFR is still in development and will make several unmanned test launches before it takes on passengers.

SpaceX has already contributed to space ventures by privately developing a liquid-fuel launch vehicle that orbited the Earth in 2008. Russian Federation halted its space-tourism program in 2010, after the USA retired its space shuttle program, leaving fewer seats available to get working astronauts into orbit.

Musk said on Twitter SpaceX's contracts with NASA remain a top priority, including the commercial crew program to shuttle NASA astronauts to and from the International Space Station.

Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla Motors, has drawn attention in recent months over his erratic behavior.
