Top US officials deny 'gutless' editorial

Top aides scurry to disavow NYTimes opinion piece, Trump jets to rally This week on Washington Week: President Donald Trump reacts to Bob Woodward's book, SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh's hearings get heated | Washington Week

Trump later tweeted, "TREASON?" and in an extraordinary move demanded that if "the GUTLESS anonymous person does indeed exist, the Times must, for national security purposes, turn him/her over to government at once!"

Ryan said he isn't anxious about President Donald Trump's public threats or inclinations toward shutting down the government in an effort to secure funding for his border wall.

No doubt President Trump is going to react well to this one.

The article, published on Wednesday, appeared just days after the publication of excerpts from a new book by famed Watergate reporter Bob Woodward that portrays Trump as prone to impulsive decision-making.

The message called the Times "complicit in this deceitful act".

Not everyone is calling for the anonymous author to come forward, however: At least one pundit claims to already know who penned the troubling opinion piece.

Jodi Kantor, an investigative reporter with the New York Times, tweeted: 'So basically: Times reporters now must try to unearth the identity of an author that our colleagues in Opinion have sworn to protect with anonymity?

While speculation ran rampant, administration officials began denying it. Pence's office issued a forceful statement, saying the vice president puts his name on opinions.

"If a person is bold enough to accuse people of negative actions, they have a responsibility to publicly stand by their words and people have the right to be able to defend themselves", Mrs. Trump said in the statement.

The Times piece slammed Mr Trump's leadership style as "impetuous, adversarial, petty and ineffective" and called some of his decisions "half-baked, ill-informed and occasionally reckless".

The nearly 1,000-word opinion piece released Wednesday afternoon described "many senior officials' at high levels of the administration working to "frustrate parts of [President Trump's] agenda and his worst inclinations".

The official's piece described a "two-track" presidency in which Trump says one thing and his staff consciously does another, citing the president's alleged preference "for autocrats and dictators".

He made the claim in response to the release of Michael Wolff's Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, which contained concerns from Trump's senior aides about his mental fitness for office. As the New York Post noted, the op-ed used the term "lodestar", a seldom-used word that is a favorite of Vice President Mike Pence.

#NYTimesOpEd was among top-trending hashtags on Twitter.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders tried to shut down the speculation.

Sanders tweeted that the media's "wild obsession" with the identity is "recklessly tarnishing" the reputation of thousands of "great Americans".

"The individual behind this piece has chosen to deceive, rather than support, the duly elected president of the United States", she writes. He told CNN he had spoken directly with its author, but did not elaborate.
