The storm is expected to expected to pass over the Florida Keys before noon Monday as it heads into the Gulf.

It is forecast to come ashore on Tuesday near the border between Louisiana and MS, and drop as much as 8 inches of rain in some areas of the US South, which is still recovering from hurricanes a year ago.

Hurricane warnings are in effect for the Alabama and MS coastlines, with tropical storm warnings extending to Louisiana and the Florida Panhandle.

The National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane warning from the mouth of the Pearl River, which separates southern MS from the easternmost part of Louisiana, to the Alabama-Florida border.

The first is its speed - Gordon is moving relatively fast at 17 miles per hour and is losing how much warm Gulf water is has to grow stronger.

Gordon never reached hurricane strength by the time it came ashore Tuesday night just west of the Mississippi-Alabama line.

"We are happy to report that hotels, casinos, attractions and restaurants have resumed business as usual", Milton Segarra, CEO of the tourism organization Visit Mississippi Gulf Coast, said in a Wednesday news release.

Authorities across the Gulf Coast urged people to stay out of the water - warnings that beach lovers like Cameron Armstrong and Matthew Ewbanks ignored on their visit to Gulf Shores on the Alabama Gulf Coast.

Gordon was located about 450km east-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River and was packing maximum sustained winds of 100km/h, the Miami-based weather forecaster said.

The Mobile office of the National Weather Service, in a statement issued shortly before 11 a.m., said Gordon would likely produce flash flooding and possible coastal surge as the storm passes.

Tropical storm force winds could arrive along the coast by Tuesday afternoon. The storm is moving toward the northwest across the lower Mississippi Valley, bringing with it rain and potential flooding. States of emergency were issued for Mississippi, Louisiana and parts of Alabama. The region could see rising waters of 3 to 5 feet. "You don't want to take it lightly, of course", MacDonald said. The area already has been impacted heavily by this summer's so-called "red tide"- massive algae blooms that have caused waves of dead marine life to wash along the coast.

Meanwhile, Florence continues to hold steady over the eastern Atlantic, about 1,240 miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands and 1,270 miles east of the Lesser Antilles.
