Japan issues evacuations for 300,000 people as typhoon Jebi bears down

Japan Urges Evacuations, Cancels Flights Ahead of Typhoon Jebi Japan hit by strongest storm in 25 yrs

Kansai International Airport is located on a man-made island and the typhoon, which is is believed to be the worst to hit Japan since 1993, caused one runway and multiple buildings to flood.

At least 11 people have been killed and about 600 injured as Typhoon Jebi ripped through Japan, the most powerful storm to hit the country in 25 years.

Three high-speed boats linking the two airports across Osaka Bay carried stranded passengers and others every 15 to 20 minutes, with one boat accommodating 110 people at a time.

An estimated 3,000 people were trapped at the terminal of Kansai global airport, which stands on a manmade island in Osaka Bay, as the typhoon barrelled across large parts of western Japan.

A 2,591-ton tanker that was mooring slammed into the side of a bridge connecting the airport to the mainland, damaging part of the bridge and the vessel.

Typhoon Jebi swept northward across the mid-section of Japan's main island on Tuesday, peeling roofs off buildings, toppling power poles and flooding the airport that serves Osaka, one of Japan's largest cities.

Based on its wind speeds, Jebi was classified as "very strong" by Japan's weather agency.

The typhoon caused serious damage to the airport, a major gateway for travelers arriving from Asian countries, and raised concerns about its impact on Japan's booming tourism industry.

At least six people have died and 160 people have been injured since the typhoon made landfall, according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK on Tuesday. Television footage showed people lining up to buy food and drinks at a convenience store in the airport.

About half a million households in Osaka and five nearby prefectures remained without power by late morning, according to Kansai Electric Power.

The flooding and landslides proved so deadly in part because many people did not heed evacuation advisories, which are not mandatory.

Kansai International Airport is partly inundated following a powerful typhoon in Izumisano, Osaka prefecture, western Japan, Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018.

Winds up to 216 kilometres (135 miles) per hour ripped off roofs, overturned trucks and swept a 2,500-ton tanker into a bridge leading to the airport, the region's main global gateway and a national transport hub.

The typhoon first made landfall on Japan's southwestern island of Shikoku and then again near Kobe on Honshu.

The Shinkansen bullet train was operating on a reduced schedule and Universal Studios Japan, a popular amusement park near Osaka, was closed.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe canceled a planned trip to Kyushu, Japan's southernmost main island, to supervise response efforts, according to AP.
