Cohn Lifted Papers Off Trump’s Desk to Stop Nafta Exit, Book Says

At a National Security Council meeting on January 19, the president questioned why the government was spending resources in the region at all.

In the reports, Matties denied he's had to explain the basics of world politics to Trump.

Woodward did not interview Trump for the book, but Trump did reach out to Woodward in August. Cohn, according to Woodward, views the president as a "professional liar". Those issuing denials, at least in part, included Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and chief of staff John Kelly.

And that seems unlikely to change with the September 11 publication by Simon & Schuster of Fear: Trump in the White House, a look at the current President and his administration from the legendary journalist and All the President's Men co-author.

The White House, in a statement from press secretary Sarah Sanders, dismissed the book as "nothing more than fabricated stories, many by former disgruntled employees, told to make the President look bad". He did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

The President is also said to have lashed out at former NY mayor Rudy Giuliani, now his attorney, and reportedly said he was a "baby" after he appeared on TV to defend Mr Trump over harassment allegations.

When it later appeared that the president had changed his mind and was going to testify after all, Dowd resigned.

"Those are his lawyers trying to help him not go to jail", an incredulous Colbert said before impersonating a fictional lawyer.

According to Woodward, Mattis told staff to ignore a tirade by Trump against Syria's president Bashar al-Assad in the wake of a chemical weapons attack in April 2017 and the United States president's alleged statement: "Let's fucking kill him!"

"He couldn't even be a one-person country lawyer down in Alabama", Trump said, according to Woodward's book.

Underscoring the aggressive response, Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale tweeted Wednesday that Woodward "got played", adding that "most of these stories are made up from low confidence under performing people that have fallen flat on their faces because they didn't have the talent or intelligence to be successful".

In his interview with the Daily Caller, Trump denied that Cohn had taken the letter.

"I'm not gonna get into name calling because I don't think you should be allowed to call names - including the president", Isakson added.

"It's a gutless coward who will not stand up and be counted for what he or she says has happened", he said.

Trump claimed he "never used those terms on anyone", but audio recordings from previous interviews prove otherwise.

The book is being released after former "Apprentice" contestant Omarosa Manigault Newman published an expose on her time in the West Wing.

"I've been on the receiving end of a Bob Woodward book", he tweeted Tuesday.

Perhaps some of the strongest rhetoric came from former FBI Director James Comey, who called Trump "morally unfit to be president", "untethered to truth", and "unethical". "I am into fiction like General Mattis, so maybe I'll take a look at this one".

The coming book also includes Trump, as he has done on Twitter in recent days, lashing out privately at Attorney General Jeff Sessions, calling him a "traitor" for choosing to recuse himself from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation election meddling investigation. Wolff's book attracted attention with its lively anecdotes but suffered from numerous factual inaccuracies.

In the biggest irony, Trump blasted the Obama White House in 2013 for "attacking" Woodward, during a controversy over an exchange Woodward had with an administration aide. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who, according to a moment in the book attributed to former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, sought to replace Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
