Steelers to start James Conner Week 1

Steelers officially throwing all the pressure on Le'Veon Bell Pitt GM 'disappointed' Bell hasn't reported
| 05 September, 2018, 15:46

But he does have a hunch - and only that - that the All-Pro running back will arrive in time as the Steelers begin installing their game plan for Sunday's season opener against the Browns in Cleveland. He started the season opener but had only 32 yards on 10 carries against the Browns followed by 87 yards on 27 carries against the Vikings in Week Two.

The Steelers hold a big, unlikely card, as they could rescind the franchise tag on Bell and make him available as an unrestricted free agent.

But according to head coach Mike Tomlin, he hasn't given a whole lot of thought as to how that will look when Bell returns or even what his goals are for getting Bell up to speed.

"When he gets here, that's when we'll start quantifying all Le'Veon Bell related things, his overall readiness, the amount of time that we have between his arrival and our next competition", Tomlin said, adding he has not been in communication with Bell this week.

Mike Tomlin was emphatic about that on Tuesday when asked if he is more comfortable with what he has behind Bell today than he was going to Cleveland past year.

"James", the Steelers coach said Tuesday. Anyway, although the team said it was disappointed that Bell didn't report on Monday, no one on the roster seems to be too concerned. Cleveland is a good team. The vast majority of guys who missed some time throughout the process have worked in some capacity and even participated in the last preseason game. In July, Le'Veon tweeted that he envisioned 2018 being his best season to date, as of right now that's looking rather unlikely, at least in a Steelers' uniform. We expect that to continue. However, one of the team's best players has yet to show up to the practice field. I'll know more (about McDonald) once he participates in practice (Wednesday). Some of those guys I'm talking about are Vance McDonald, James Washington, Mike Hilton, T.J. Watt, and Xavier Grimble.
