Winds of up to 209 kilometers per hour early Tuesday afternoon raked Kansai airport, where one of the two runways and basement floor of a terminal building flooded and around 3,000 people were stranded, according to local authorities.

Jebi, which means "swallow" in Korean, collided with the country's Shikoku island around noon, with heavy rain and gusting winds recorded at up to 208 km/h (129 mph), Reuters reports.

The storm was heading north across a swath of Japan's main island of Honshu toward the Sea of Japan. The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said 150 others were injured.

It had been anchored nearby, but strong wind caused it to drift.

High waves hit breakwaters at a port of Aki, Kochi prefecture, Japan, on Tuesday.

Parts of a train station roof also collapsed in Kyoto following the stormy weather.

Other video showed roofs being torn off houses, transformers on electric poles exploding and a auto scudding on its side across a parking lot.

Hundreds of flights, trains and ferries have had to be cancelled.

Primary and middle schools in affected areas were closed while regional businesses also reacted quickly, with a major railway firm and Universal Studios Japan in Osaka shutting down for Tuesday.

Domestic airlines canceled over 700 local and global flights, mainly scheduled to depart from or arrive at airports in western and central Japan.

Kansai International Airport, located on a manmade island in Osaka Prefecture, registered a maximum instantaneous wind speed of 58.1 meters per second around 1:40 p.m., and Wakayama registered 57.4 meters per second around 1:20 p.m. Toyota Motor Corp said it was cancelling the night shift at 14 plants.

The capital escaped relatively unscathed, with some intermittent squalls.
