Almost two-thirds of American adults do not want President Donald Trump to fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions and say they support special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, a new poll finds.

Trump has called the investigation a "witch hunt" and routinely questions why the Justice Department isn't investigating Hillary Clinton.

Asked if he would comply with a subpoena from Mueller, Trump said, "I'll see what happens" and added: "I view it differently".

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, told CBS News' John Dickerson that the Trump-Sessions relationship simply isn't working, and the president needs a Cabinet he's "confident in". "I wanted to stay out, but at some point if it doesn't straighten out properly ..."

"I just would love to have him do a great job", Bloomberg quoted Trump as saying in the Oval Office.

But despite Trump's unhappiness with Sessions, when asked if he would keep him employed past midterms, Bloomberg reports, Trump declined to answer.

"The president's lost confidence in Jeff Sessions", Graham said.

Last summer, Graham said there would be "holy hell to pay" if Sessions was sacked, but this week, he said the relationship between Trump and Sessions "is not working".

Meanwhile, Trump's lawyers had previously warned a dismissal of Sessions would help special counsel Robert Mueller in his investigation of any potential obstruction of justice involving Trump.

Mr. Trump admonished his attorney general on Twitter last week, claiming he "never took control of the Justice Department".

Wallace said, "Remember though, that the recusal of Sessions did not lead to the special counsel".

"Knowing him as I do, I don't think he'll quit", Inhofe said Tuesday by telephone from Washington. He charged that Mr Mueller's probe was "highly conflicted" and that "real corruption goes untouched".

Republicans on Capitol Hill have been anxious the President would complicate Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation to the Supreme Court and place further controversy around the White House ahead of the midterm elections.
