Hurricane Lane, which could be the most powerful storm to hit Hawaii since Hurricane Iniki in 1992, was forecast to continue its northwest turn toward the islands on Thursday.

2nd UPDATE, 10:45 AM: CBS now says that production on Season 9 of Hawaii Five-O also has shut down as Hurrican Lane threatens the islands.

A photo taken from the International Space Station and moved on social media by astronaut Ricky Arnold shows Hurricane Lane in the early morning hours near Hawaii, U.S., August 22, 2018. However, even if the worst of Hurricane Lane avoids the islands the storm will bring with it enough rain and destructive wind to do serious damage.

The storm is reported to have winds up to 145 miles per hour, and Hawaii Governor David Ige is warning residents to prepare themselves with at least 14 days of food and water and to seek shelter, CNN reported.

The National Weather Service warned that some areas could see up to 30in before the system passes, with bands of rain extending 564km from the hurricane's centre.

Maui County officials warned that those needing to use Molokai's shelter should get there soon because of concerns that high surf could make the main highway on the south coast of the island impassable.

And inside grocery stores across the Hawaiian Islands, people are hoarding water, toilet paper and Spam. To the north, Oahu was under a hurricane warning while Kauai remained on hurricane watch meaning it could face such conditions starting Friday morning.

After Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico a year ago, a FEMA report noted that one of its main issues was not having enough generators and other emergency aid on the island before the storm. "And we do that by making sure we're prepared".

"The approval of the Presidential Disaster Declaration means that Hawai'i will have quick and efficient access to federal resources in the wake of Hurricane Lane, as our communities and residents recover from any damage and losses caused by the storm".

President Trump "swiftly approved" it, he said.

"El Niño conditions give Hawaii their greatest chance of significant hurricanes because of the increased sea surface temperatures", said David Titley, a climate scientist at Penn State University and a retired Navy rear admiral.

"We can't go in because the roads - there's a river of water down there", Hawaii County managing director Wil Okabe said.

At last count there were more than 2,000 unsheltered homeless people on Oahu. As of Wednesday, the Big Island as well as Maui, Lanai, Molokai and Kahoolawe are under a hurricane warning.

President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency for Hawaii and ordered federal authorities to help supplement state and local responses, the White House said on Thursday.
