Big US retailers stick by Roundup after cancer verdict

- Consumers might not think their breakfast cereal could bring bits of pesticides to the kitchen table, but a new study links oats and oat-based snacks popular with children to a weed-killing poison found in Roundup, according to independent laboratory tests commissioned by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a non-profit environmental health and advocacy organization.
Now an organization called the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has tested a list of popular breakfast foods and snack bars - and has found that many of them contain this unsafe chemical.
The chemical in question, Glyphosate, is the active ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup weed killer and at high levels has been linked to cancer.
A study published in May by a team at the National Cancer Institute found no evidence linking glyphosate with cancer. Glyphosate has a more than 40-year history of safe use.
Quaker responded to the EWG's report with a statement which read in part, "We proudly stand by the safety and quality of our Quaker products".
"No other herbicide has been tested to the lengths that glyphosate has", the NFF president, Fiona Simson, said as quoted in The Guardian. Some of those products included Back to Nature Classic Granola, Nature Valley Granola Protein Oats 'n Honey, Quaker Dinosaur Egg Instant Oats, Great Value Original Instant Oatmeal, Cheerios Toasted Whole Grain Oat Cereal, Lucky Charms, Quaker Steel Cut Oats and Kellog's Nutrigrain Strawberry Breakfast Bars.
Just because a pesticide level is legal in food doesn't mean that level is safe.
In April, internal emails obtained by the nonprofit US Right to Know revealed that the Food and Drug Administration has been testing food for glyphosate for two years and has found "a fair amount", but the FDA has not released its findings.
A recent verdict finding Monsanto's popular weed killer caused a terminally ill man's cancer could be disastrous for the agrochemical giant as thousands of other plaintiffs prepare for their day in court and lawmakers begin to consider bans on the product.
"I was shocked", said Dr. Jennifer Lowry, who heads the Council on Environmental Health for the American Academy of Pediatrics and is a toxicologist at Children's Mercy Kansas City.
The Trump Administration's Waters of the US rule was delivered a legal blow this week when a SC federal judge issued an injunction. Glyphosate is commonly used by farmers across the industry who apply it pre-harvest.
Glyphosate was even found in a few organic products, though most had non-detectable levels. "And essentially we're just throwing it at them".
Simply stated, there is far too much glyphosate in their products for parents to feel comfortable feeding them to their kids.
