Dozens dead after school bus carrying children hit by airstrike

Saudi-led coalition air strikes on bus carrying children in Yemen leaves 'dozens' dead Airstrike by U.S. ally on bus carrying Yemeni children kills and wounds scores

At least 29 children were killed Thursday in an attack on a bus in rebel-held northern Yemen, where a Saudi-led military coalition said it carried out a strike, the Red Cross said. "[ICRC] sending additional supplies to hospitals to cope with the influx".

"Following an attack this morning on a bus driving children in Dahyan Market, northern Saada, (an ICRC-supported) hospital has received dozens of dead and wounded", the organisation said on Twitter without giving more details. He said this made the attack a "legitimate military action in accordance with worldwide humanitarian law".

A Yemeni child is transported to a hospital after being wounded in a reported airstrike on the Iran-backed Huthi rebels' stronghold province of Saada, on Thu., Aug. 9, 2018.

An airstrike in the north reportedly killed at least 50, more than half of them children.

Houthi militants responsible for firing ballistic missiles and targeting civilians "will be held accountable", said the Saudi statement.

It said the air strike was aimed at missile launchers used to attack the southern Saudi city of Jizan on Wednesday, where a Yemeni civilian was killed.

Turki al-Malki was defiant about the attack on the busload of children, saying it was retaliation for a missile strike from the rebel Houthis.

Col al Maliki said that the coalition targeted the Houthi militia members who were inside the bus and said that they were the planners and operators of the missiles launch pads. Say: I want the State Dept to condemn the Saudis for bombing Yemeni children and I want the U.S. to stop selling weapons to Saudi Arabia.

Earlier, Maliki accused the Huthis of "recruiting child soldiers, throwing them in battlefields and using them as tools".

Wednesday's attack brings the tally to 165 rebel missiles launched since 2015, according to the coalition, which that year intervened in the Yemeni government's fight against Houthi rebels. Video footage, which CBS News can't independently verify, appear to show the devastating aftermath.

Al-Malki insisted Thursday's attack carried out in Saada is a "legitimate military action" and is "in accordance with global humanitarian law and customs".

The coalition denied responsibility for those attacks.

The alliance says it does not intentionally target civilians and has set up a committee to probe alleged mass casualty air strikes, which has mostly cleared the coalition of any blame.

"It is beyond cruel; innocent children's lives have been lost".

The war in Yemen has left more than 10,000 dead since 2015, sparking what the United Nations says is the world's worst humanitarian crisis. We urge all parties to agree to an immediate cessation of hostilities, return to the negotiation table to commit to a ceasefire and cooperate with the U.N. Special Envoy Martin Griffiths.
