Oscars to introduce popular film category and shortened ceremony

The Oscars Will Be Adding A New Category To Honor ‘Popular’ Movies Oscars 2020 Airdate Announced and Changes Teased by AMPAS
| 08 August, 2018, 21:30

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced Wednesday morning that the prestigious award show is going to be making some changes, including a new category that will be centered around "achievement in popular film".

The Oscars are adding a new category to honor popular films and promising a brisk three-hour ceremony and a much earlier air date in 2020. It also clocked it at almost 4 hours, making it the longest show in over a decade. That same year, the Academy also reinstated a "preferential ballot" for Best Picture voting that allows members to rank films according to preference in that category, rather than simply picking one victor. The 2019 ceremony will still air February 24.

The statement added that "eligibility requirements and other key details will be forthcoming", though it's quite reasonable to expect that the award will require a minimum box office gross to ensure only truly populist movies make the cut.

The legendarily lengthy Oscars telecast will also be shortened, which means certain awards will not be presented during the live broadcast - another major break with Academy Awards tradition.

The Academy also mentioned that the 2020 Oscars will be airing weeks earlier than usual on February 8.

The new date moves up the awards - typically held on the last Sunday in February (or first Sunday in March when accommodating for the Winter Olympics) - to February 9, 2020. Winning moments will be edited and later aired during the broadcast.

After the news broke, film aficionados immediately dove in to the discussion to give their guesses as to what this new "popular film" category will be. The next ceremony will be the 91st Academy Awards.

It's unclear yet whether the new award will be given out at the next show, in 2019, or even what the voting criteria is going to be, but the new gong will likely mean good news for films like Black Panther and The Greatest Showman.
