He went on to say that federal authorities have done a poor job of implementing methods to reduce the number of deadly fires, and that this has been devastating for America's wildlands. "That's one of those records you don't want to see".

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for evidence to support Trump's tweet.

Republican lawmakers in California's agriculture-rich Central Valley complain the state and federal governments allow too much of the state's rainfall and snow melt to flow naturally through rivers and into the Pacific Ocean, instead of being diverted for irrigation.

Some believe Mr Trump's tweets refer to a row about water supplies, fish habitat protection and local farmers - but environmental experts say this has no relevance to the state's firefighting capability.

The Mendocino Complex is now considered the sixth-largest wildfire in California history. It was almost halfway contained, Cal Fire said. Another 11,300 structures remain threatened, according to Cal Fire. "Must also clear trees to stop fire spreading".

Elsewhere in California, evacuations were ordered for cabins in Cleveland National Forest canyons in Orange County on Monday afternoon after a blaze broke out and quickly spread to blacken some 700 acres (283 hectares).

The Mendocino Complex Fire takes the top spot on the list of largest fires in state history from the Thomas Fire, which scorched Ventura and Santa Barbara counties in Southern California just last December.

On Sunday, Trump tweeted, "California wildfires are being magnified & made so much worse by the bad environmental laws which aren't allowing massive amount of readily available water to be properly utilized".

It burned so furiously on July 26 that it created what is called a fire whirl.

Yosemite Valley is home to some of the most famous destinations of the park. Throughout this busy fire season, firefighters here in Northern California have not indicated that a lack of water is hampering their efforts to fight these fires or contributing to their growth.

Of the two fires that makeup the Mendocino Complex Fire, the River Fire, which has burned over 48,000 acres, has the largest containment, sitting at 58 percent contained.

Critics said his tweets ignored the greater wildfire frequency and severity experienced in California and other Western states from extreme drought and sustained periods of hot, dry weather, in keeping with the forecasts of climate scientists.

The Carr Fire, which incinerated 1,067 homes, started with sparks from the steel wheel of a towed-trailer's flat tire, Department of Agriculture and Fire Prevention officials said.

More than 14,000 firefighters and hundreds of U.S. army personnel are trying to contain the more than a dozen major fires burning throughout the state.

Temperatures could reach 110 degrees (43 Celsius) in Northern California over the next few days with gusty winds fanning the flames of the complex, a National Weather Service meteorologist said. Four of the state's largest six fires have occurred since 2012.
