President Trump has admitted for the first time that the goal of his son's meeting with a Russian lawyer before the 2016 elections was to gather information about his opponent, Hillary Clinton.

US President Donald Trump admitted his son, Donald Jr (seen here), met with a Russian lawyer in Trump Tower in 2016. At various times, they defended the meeting by claiming it was exclusively about worldwide adoption, said that they were doing standard opposition research, and even argued that they didn't get anything out of it so how can it be illegal? Well, well, would you look at that: the patented "how dare this Fox moron accuse me of smoking something other than premium cigars" tweet.

Trump's admission through Twitter on Sunday about the objective behind the 2016 Trump Tower meeting was the latest step in the long-evolving story from Trump, Trump Jr. and the President's legal team. While originally Trump, a Republican, said the meeting was about adoptions, on Sunday he said on Twitter that it was about getting information on his election opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton.

If U.S. President Donald Trump is subpoenaed by a special counsel investigating contacts between the 2016 Trump election campaign and Russian Federation, his lawyers will attempt to quash it in court, one of Trump's lawyers said on Sunday.

"I had bad information at the time and made a mistake in my statement", Sekulow said Sunday, noting that he had only been working for Trump a short time when he made the misstatement previous year.

US President Donald Trump has yet again tweeted about his personal legal issues in a way he perhaps shouldn't have.

The president also referred to the reports that he is concerned about the potential legal problems his son might face as "fake news" and a "complete fabrication".

Trump Jr. had also previously claimed that he had never participated in any such meeting at all.

"Most politicians would have gone to a meeting like the one Don jr attended in order to get info on an opponent", Trump wrote on Twitter.

"They talked about the adoption stuff which was actually a big thing at the time, but nothing happened", Trump said in July 2017 about the meeting.

It started when Washington Post reported Trump was anxious his son - DJTJ.as Kimmel calls him - could be in a legal jam because of the meeting Junior took with Russians at Trump Tower during the campaign.

Ingraham went on speaking before Trump Jr eventually called back, saying: 'Somehow you got cut off - they started playing the recording and then it got cut off'. Trump's legal team defended the statement as "short but accurate" in a letter sent to Mueller in January, as quoted in the New York Times.

"The question is how will it be illegal?"

One of Trump's current attorneys, Jay Sekulow, agreed Sunday with Trump's tweet during an appearance on ABC's "This Week". At that point, he said, Trump's attorneys would raise what Trump has alleged are Mueller's "conflicts of interest".

'They purposely cause great division & distrust. Trump wrote. "They are very risky & sick!"
