This year, California wildfires have burned more land earlier in the "fire season" than usual, said Ken Pimlott, Cal Fire director, during a news conference on Saturday. The whirl uprooted trees and tore roofs from homes, Dykema said.

Dykema said the whirl measured a 3 on the five-level Enhanced Fujita scale, which scientists use to classify the strength of tornados.

The Mendocino Complex fires are now some of the largest on record in California's history.

"This is a particularly unsafe situation with extremely low humidity and high winds". The Mandatory Evacuation area is west of Lucerne at Bartlett Springs Road and Highway CA-20, south of the fire, east of the fire, north of Clear Lake including the communities of Blue Lakes, Upper Lake, Nice, Lakeport, Witter Springs, Bachelor Valley, Scotts Valley, Saratoga Springs.

California fire officials said Saturday that the two fires about 100 miles north grew to nearly 250 square miles (648 kilometers).

In the Redding area, where the Carr Fire has killed six people, including two firefighters, winds of 25 miles (40 km) per hour, temperatures above 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 Celsius) and extremely low humidity were in the forecast from Thursday evening until Saturday, the National Weather Service said. In all, they have destroyed hundreds of homes, killed eight people - including four firefighters - and shut down Yosemite National Park.

As of the latest update, the Carr wildfire has now destroyed 1,060 residential properties, 19 commercial properties and 474 farm buildings, outbuildings and the like (which can often also be insured). "When the winds are strong enough and the fire is hot enough, sometimes, the rising air columns start to rotate".

These numbers are likely to rise further, given the Carr fire is still only 37% contained and the weather conditions will remain conducive to burns, making fighting the fire more hard.

They included a bulldozer operator whose vehicle almost slipped off a mountain trail three times before it rolled into a ravine and crushed him at the Ferguson Fire near Yosemite National Park, a Cal Fire report said.

CBN News' Heather Sells is in California covering the wildfires. They have grown to nearly 250 square miles (648 kilometers). Workers who live in Yosemite's popular Valley region were ordered to leave Friday because of inaccessible roads.

The Sacramento Bee, citing Cal Fire, reported that more than 14,000 firefighters were battling 17 blazes across the state.

Mr Veverka, 34, said: "Right now, it's pretty much guaranteed we'll go from fire to fire to fire, until everything is out". Varney's radio wasn't communicating with headquarters, so his assistant relayed messages - until they lost contact.

Officials have not said how the other three firefighters died fighting blazes near Yosemite and Redding.

The report called for better "risk assessment" among firefighters.
