China "pivotal" to preserving nuclear deal, says Iran's foreign minister

US President Donald Trump told White House reporters on Monday that he is willing to meet Iranian leaders "any time they want".

In short, Trump withdrew from the Iran deal, likely imposed tremendous cost and stress on Tehran's economy, and Iran has responded by staying in the deal and trying to portray itself as a good actor worthy of the world's support against United States hegemony.

Nevertheless, Iranians have been demonstrating since December 2017 against the high cost of living and the systematic corruption within the system. Yet the potential for major shocks to the economy from the phasing-out of the greenback and switch to a new currency has stalled such moves to decouple their economies from US -dollar hegemony.

Teams of USA officials have been visiting capitals around the world to try to choke off sales of Iranian oil by early November, when United States sanctions are due to snap back into effect.

"Iran, and its economy, is going very bad, and fast!" he said in the same missive.

Iran has started naval exercises in the Gulf amid heightened tensions with Washington, US officials have revealed.

"I would certainly meet with Iran if they wanted to meet", Trump said.

Even the temptation of President Trump's offer of unconditional negotiations with Tehran was officially left unanswered, as the two major factions in the regime struggle for power.

Other figures in Iran's government dismissed the idea as non starter, saying the nuclear deal represented the talks they supported, and having that ripped up made future conversations untenable.

Or the regime could start to address what America calls its "malign influence" in the region, including its support to Syrian President Bashar Assad and threats to shut down the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping lane for global oil supplies.

Protests that began in Iran on Tuesday afternoon continued across the country in Isfahan, Shiraz, Mashhad, Karaj, Sari, Bandar Abbas, and Ahvaz. "The Trump administration is doing that on objective to keep everyone feeling threatened", said a Western businessman in Tehran working in the oil and gas sector.

Footage posted online showed dozens of marchers in central Tehran chanting, "Death to the dictator", referring to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The videos could not be authenticated. But they denied security forces were involved, Iranian news agencies reported. Authorities reported the first fatality among protesters, with the shooting of a man in Karaj, west of Tehran. In August and November Iran faces two new waves of sanctions that will shut off their access to U.S. banking and oil exports.
