Crown jewels belonging to the Swedish royal family were swiped in a heist by thieves who made their escape via speedboat.

They were stolen from the Cathedral of Strangnas, a 900-year-old church around 80 miles from the capital, Stockholm.

Among the priceless possessions taken were two gold crowns, which belonged to King Karl IX and Queen Kristina. The royal jewels were initially buried with the couple but were then exhumed and put on display in the cathedral, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Two suspects have been seen fleeing the cathedral on a motorboat and police are now hunting them in a major river chase.

The thieves have not yet been captured.

"The two men hurriedly jumped on board".

'We have some different information about how exactly the boat looked.

Police have been searching for the culprits with a helicopter and boats, but no arrests have been made.

"I knew immediately they were burglars because of the way they were behaving". A spokesperson for the cathedral said that the alarm went off as designed, and security precautions were in place at the time, the Post said.

Maria Ellior, an official with the Swedish police's National Operations Department, told the local TT news agency Wednesday that the items would be "impossible to sell". However, police spokesman Thomas Agnevik was optimistic that the difficulty in finding a market for these items would lead to their recovery.

Agnevik added: "But if they are pros, we may not get the items back or find whoever did this".
