Aurora Police: Man shot and killed by officer had just shot armed intruder inside home Colorado officers accidentally kill armed homeowner during "chaotic" scene
| 02 August, 2018, 20:47

When officers burst into the home, they shot the homeowner, described as a long-time resident, grandfather and retired family man, who was often seen tending to his front gardens.

According to police in Aurora, Colo., officers responded to a call on Monday from a woman who said a man was breaking into her house.

Officers later found the intruder dead on the bathroom floor. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The officer who shot the resident of the home has been placed on standard paid leave.

The identities of the homeowner and the intruder have not been released.

The child suffered serious injuries, but they're not considered life-threatening.

The Denver Police Department is assisting with the investigation, Aurora police spokesman Kenneth Forrest told the Washington Post on Tuesday.

According to a statement released on behalf of Police Chief Nick Metz, emergency services received "multiple calls" about a disturbance on Monday.

Mohamedbhai told 9Wants to Know the family believes the man may have come from a nearby house party.

The man, later determined to be the homeowner, was transported to the hospital, where he died from his wounds. "We are providing assistance through our victim advocates to help the family of the deceased resident through this very hard time", Metz said. The police department said it would be holding a news conference later this week to give more information about the incident. Because this incident occurred within Adams County, the facts of the investigation will be presented to the Office of the District Attorney for a determination of whether criminal charges should be filed against any involved person.

The police department voice mail ends with an appeal: "Thank you for calling the city of Aurora, the safest large city in Colorado".

This is the second deadly officer-involved shooting in recent days by Aurora police.
