Manafort is the only American charged by Mueller to opt for a trial.

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort begins his first of two trials on Tuesday. The pool of jurors will face questions from both sides and U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III as they try to weed out potential prejudice in what has become a highly publicized and politically divisive investigation.

Turley said Manafort may be "playing a pardon strategy". "His intentions were to commit crimes'". The exhibits also "contain evidence about the identity of Manafort's sources of income in Ukraine, and in particular the oligarchs who instituted the practice of paying Manafort via foreign accounts", according to the filing.

A star government witness will be Richard Gates, a former deputy Trump campaign chairman and former Manafort business associate.

"Gates can provide context for these messages, which can, in turn, corroborate Gates's testimony", she said.

The indictment accused Gates of misrepresenting Manafort's financial history in applications for loans.

"You really don't care about Mr. Manafort's bank fraud. What you really care about is what information Mr. Manafort could give you that would reflect on Mr. Trump of lead to his prosecution or impeachment", Ellis said.

"He'd be in worse position than he was when he started", Akerman said. "It blocks out that defense". The 45-year-old first came into the lobbyist's orbit as an intern in the 1990s, at the firm Black, Manafort, Stone, Kelly.

Manafort, 69, has pleaded not guilty to 18 counts of bank and tax fraud related to his lobbying activities on behalf of the former Russian-backed government of Ukraine.

Trump and his lawyers have repeatedly sought to play down Manafort's connection to the president, yet the trial won't be entirely without references to the campaign. Gates, who worked alongside Manafort as a political consultant, was indicted along with Manafort in October 2017. Gates and Manafort also pursued side business ventures with those oligarchs.

Manafort was present during the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting that was set up after a Kremlin-linked lawyer offered up dirt on Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton to members of the Trump campaign.

He stayed close to Trump's inner circle after the election. He then helped plan Mr. Trump's inauguration in some capacity before he left for a job with America First Priorities, a pro-Trump group. But none of the cases stemming from Mueller's probe have gone to a jury trial - until now. He struggled to make bail, taking more than two months to hash out the $5 million bond deal that secured his release from house arrest. "With a northern Virginia jury, they know they may not be kindly disposed to the president". The attorneys have "memoranda, emails, and photos reflecting tasks performed" to demonstrate the source of a large part of Manafort's income, CNN reports.

Seven prosecutors from Mueller's office were expected to feature prominently in the trial, including veteran government attorneys Andrew Weissmann and Greg Andres, who returned to the government from private practice to work on Mueller's probe. Mueller ramped up the pressure with additional charges against Manafort and Gates, in Virginia, on Feb 22. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

A list of 30 witnesses submitted by prosecutors includes luxury rug dealers, clothiers, real estate agents and others who would be expected to describe how Manafort spent money.
