Thirteen others were wounded, some suffering potentially life-altering injuries.

"We are utterly devastated by the incomprehensible news that our son was responsible for the senseless violence and loss of life that took place on the Danforth", the statement read.

Toronto police say they have no information that he has traveled overseas recently.

Neighbours of Hussain's family had similar memories of Hussain, who lived with his mother, father and brother in a highrise in Toronto's Thorncliffe Park neighbourhood. A vigil for the victims was held in Toronto on Monday evening as Torontonians gathered to mark yet another violent episode in the recent history of Canada's largest city.

Yet if the truth is out there, and it may not be, it probably lies as it often does in the murky middle. Residents of the neighbourhood said Hussain's family has suffered other tragedies in recent years, including the death of Hussain's sister from a auto crash.

The 29-year-old man who opened fire on restaurant goers and pedestrians on a Toronto street overnight, killing two people and wounding 13, had "severe" mental health issues, his family said on Monday.

"The people here are very friendly and it's a very loving community", said Marlene Julien.

The third party, who had distributed the family's statement, didn't reply to a Post email Tuesday, asking if he had any light to shed on the apparent contradiction between the statement and police files.

Two females, an 18-year-old and a 10-year-old, were killed and after exchanging gunfire with police, the shooter also died, but it is unclear if he was shot by police or fell victim to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Hussain did not have a criminal record and his prior contact with police did not involve a risk to public safety, according to Toronto police spokesman Meaghan Gray.

Fallon was attending a birthday celebration with friends at a restaurant when the shooter struck, the Globe & Mail said in a report on Tuesday.

Sources say Toronto police and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) officials in Ottawa, as well as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), are looking into his past, which sources say, include his residence in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

American authorities are now helping Toronto police track down the precise origins of Faisal Hussain's gun, CTV News reported, citing a police source familiar with the investigation.

Where then does that leave those who wish to point to a cause or explanation for Hussain's actions, if only to confirm some belief or bias or fear of their own? Does he probably know Muslim extremists?

Treatments could not fix his mental illness, his parents added. Yeah, probably. Does he have access to guns from the guys in his neighbourhood? Yeah. But be real careful what road you go down.

"We're here to show that we're not scared and that we're going to pick ourselves up and the community up".

Faisal Hussain is the name of the suspect in the Toronto mass shooting. And that, for all the shades of grey that constitute the human animal, is now the ghastly central fact of his life.

And one night, he fired upon children and teenagers and people having coffee.
