Turkish president breaks silence on Ozil-Germany stand off

Ozil's Turkish hometown switches new street sign Turkey's Erdogan decries 'racist attitude' against Mesut Ozil
| 25 July, 2018, 19:56

Ozil is now back in pre-season training with Arsenal and Emery says the midfielder has the full respect from the club over his decision. "They are great teams with great players, it's a test for us to get ready for the new season so it's something to look forward to".

Emery added: 'All of us want to help Mesut feel like it is his home here with us, like a family and it is a family for every player.

The picture of a smiling Ozil and Erdogan side by side, holding up the team shirt of his English club Arsenal, set off a row in Germany when the photo was snapped in May.

Ozil's announcement that he was retiring from global football at the age of 29 came in a series of lengthy, defiant statements in which he decried his treatment in the wake of the nation's disastrous World Cup campaign as well as the reaction to a controversial meeting he held with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan back in May.

"Mesut has the respect of every player here", said Emery, who was appointed as Arsene Wenger's successor in May. I am sure he is going to have a big season with us'. It is also true that Ozil was among the poorest performers among a poor German team at the World Cup in Russian Federation.

"It is a personal decision from Mesut and I respect it".

Many politicians and journalists in Germany questioned Ozil's loyalty to his country after photographs emerged of Ozil, a third generation immigrant with a Turkish heritage, posing alongside Erdogan.

"He has experience, he has quality and he has a great mentality".

"We are expecting good matches against PSG and Atletico Madrid".

He said in Ankara it's "truly unacceptable that a young man who has given everything to the German national team and has contributed to its success is facing such a racist attitude because of his religion".

And having returned to training on Friday, he jetted out with the rest of Arsenal's squad to south-east Asia for the prestige International Champions Cup friendlies against Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

We want to make him feel free.
