Mesut Ozil's shock retirement from global football caught Germany head coach Joachim Loew by surprise, it emerged on Tuesday.

In a series of tweets, Ozil defended his meeting with Erdogan during a charitable event in London, saying a picture with the Turkish president was not about politics or elections.

"For many years, the DFB has been heavily involved in integration work in Germany", the statement said.

Between his debut in 2009 and his final appearance in June, Ozil played nearly 100 times for Germany, helping them win the World Cup in 2014 and even was voted as Germany's national player of the year on five separate occasions.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday the treatment of Mesut Ozil was unacceptable after the football star quit Germany's national team.

Ozil has been generally praised by members of the football fraternity for speaking out on the matter.

"Mesut Abi ('brother' in Turkish), your technique on the ball has opened the door to the national team for players like me", wrote Draxler on his Instagram account along with a picture of him and Ozil.

But it was met with a mix of dismay and outrage in Germany.

And the country's sports minister, Mehmet Kasapoglu, said the player had taken an "honourable stance".

The Nigerian global was in and out of the Arsenal team throughout last season but is thought to be in new boss Unai Emery's plans for the campaign ahead. He is a footballer who has contributed a great deal to the national team.

"I think his time to play in the national team is over". At the same time, Ozdemir, who himself has Turkish roots, said Ozil "did not live up to his function of setting examples" by failing to distance himself from the hardline Turkish leader.

Germany's football association, the DFB, was among those to criticise Ozil after he had his photograph taken with Erdogan.

Asked if Ozil would be missed, Matthaus told ESPN FC: "No, we have a lot of good players, and when some player cannot perform like before, we have option to give the new generation the chance to help us to make the results like, for example, 2014". "Ozil's world view here is dangerously close to Erdogan and his despots", charged the tabloid-style daily.

"It was about me respecting the highest office of my family's country. I see few here who have really behaved correctly".

However, the DFB felt the photo of Ozil, who was pictured along with Manchester City's Ilkay Gundogan, had "raised questions for many people in Germany" and that "it was important to us that he explained it".
