CVS Apologizes After Pharmacist Harasses Trans Customer

A transgender woman in Arizona was refused her hormone treatment medication by a CVS pharmacist. Hall wrote, "I left the store feeling mortified".

"If there is an instance where a particular pharmacist has a belief that they can't fill a prescription, they need to take action right away to make sure that someone else is taking care of it", Kilar said.

"I was finally going to start seeing my body reflect my gender identity and the woman I've always known myself to be", said Hall, who declined through an ACLU spokesperson to be interviewed for this article.

Hilde Hall said in a blog post published on the American Civil Liberties Union's (ACLU) website that she was excited to fill her first hormone therapy prescription.

"He did not give me a clear reason for the refusal", Hall wrote.

Although Hall acknowledged that CVS had received a flawless score from the Human Rights Campaign for its policies related to LGBTQ equality ― a fact also touted in the company's statement ― she said "measures should be in place to ensure no other customer is humiliated like I was".

Hall added that the experience left him feeling "embarrassed and stressed" to the point where he nearly broke down crying in the store.

Hall had received three prescriptions April 24 from her doctor, who specializes in hormone therapy, she said. "I just froze and worked on holding back the tears".

Hall said that after the incident she contacted her doctor who called the prescription into a local Walgreens store, where the medication was given without hesitation.

Hall made her story public about a month after a Walgreens pharmacist refused to fill an Arizona woman's prescription for misoprostol, a medication that can be used to end a failed pregnancy.

A pharmacist working for CVS in Arizona refused to fill a trans woman's hormone prescription and is no longer employed by the company, according to statements released from the woman, Hilde Hall, on Thursday and the company on Friday.

Pop culture junkie. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was "just the cutest thing ever".

The company said they didn't respond to Hall's numerous complaints due to "an unintentional oversight".

The pharmacist refused to fill one of the subscriptions, Hall wrote. It was later filled at a Walgreens pharmacy "without question".

"CVS Health extends its honest apologies to Ms. Hall for her experience at our pharmacy in Fountain Hills, Arizona last spring", the statement reads.

DeAngelo confirmed that the employee no longer works for CVS.

DeAngelo added that CVS is making arrangements to speak with Hall.

"So far what I have experienced is a lot of dirty looks and a lot of some people spitefully using the wrong pronouns", Inderrinden said.

Companies often have individual policies to ensure customers are still served respectfully and efficiently. In January, the Department of Health and Human Services began moving to implement protections for healthcare workers seeking to deny service to transgender people based on moral and religious objections.

Arizona is one of at least six states that allows pharmacies and druggists to refuse to fill a prescription on religious or moral grounds.
